Telling a story with a point

Lane Bailey - Saturday, 12 July 2008 12:30

Those of you that have been reading me for a while know that i love to tell a story.  Often, the story has a hidden meaning.  Honestly, I got this from my Dad.  He loved a good story.  And there was always a point.

Recently I have been asked about my reasons for changing to Diamond Dwellings…

And there is a story.  Since I am getting ready to go to the Inman News Blogger’s Connet and RE Bar Camp in San Francisco, I figured a story about San Francisco would be appropriate.

In 1853, a businessman moved to San Francisco with an eye toward striking it rich with the Gold Rush.  He wasn’t looking for gold, but rather was looking to provide something the miners needed… tents and covers for their Conestoga wagons.  He brought a sturdy fabric, as well as buttons and rivets to secure the fabric and reinforce seams.

But the miners weren’t buying.

They didn’t care about the tents.  They didn’t care about the covers for their wagons.

The man had a plan… and it FELL APART.  Bad.

But the man also had the ability to listen, and he WAS hearing something.  The miners were suffering with lousy work clothes.  The pants fell apart, and the pockets tore out.

Time for a new plan!

He had the materials.  He had the ability.  Now he had found the need and the customers.

Levi Strauss began to make blue jeans.

My point?

I had a plan.  I liked (and still like) my broker at the old office.  I think they are a good company.  But, I needed a different type of company.  I needed support that could only come from a brokerage that was focused on niche marketing and Web 2.0 technologies.

The icing on the cake was when Inman announced their finalist for the Innovator Awards, and Diamond Dwellings was on the short list.  Opportunity isn’t presented every day to be part of something like this.

Needless to say… I’m excited.

Many of the changes won’t begin until August.  But there are some cool things coming.  Stay tuned.
