101 Cars You must drive? #1

Lane Bailey - Monday, 20 October 2008 11:04

I have been somewhat of a fan of the show…  But, I think that there are some serious issues with some of the cars.  It should be about great drives… not just the most influential cars.  There are some cars that have impacted the landscape in amazing ways, but that doesn’t mean they are must drives… like the K-car.  Not a drivers machine, but certainly influential.

This has gotten me thinking that I should do my own list…  And it would be fun to do a TV show and actually get a chance to drive all of them, but I would expect that I just get to write about them.  If you happen to have one of the cars, I would be happy to do a follow up podcast with the driving it… hint, hint.

So, here is one for the road…

Stay tuned…  I think we will hit some cool ones.

  • In the history of P cars I have to throw out the 912. Porsche came out with the new body style, threw the 356 motor in it, called it a 912. They also put in a fancy 6 cylinder which was named the 911. (they wanted 901 but that was taken by Peugeot)

Surprisingly, US buyers were very resistant to change and the 912 initially outsold the 911 by a very large margin!
    For 1966, Porsche produced 9,090 912s versus 3,730 of the 911s.
Once the idea of a flat six caught on - the 911 took off and they haven't looked back.

However, the extra weight of the six in the back gave the 911 an interesting characteristic.
    "Throttle Lift Oversteer"
Many a professional driver at the time said they prefer to race the very well balanced 912.

The 912 came in both Coupe and Targa models. For me there's nothing like having the wind blowing in your face on a crisp morning drive.

For the sheer human experience, I therefore throw the 1968 Porsche 912 Soft Window Targa into your 101 cars hat.
And I even know where we can find one!
