101 Cars… Part 2

Lane Bailey - Tuesday, 21 October 2008 11:23

I started this yesterday, and it will NOT be every day, but I did want to knock a couple of these out…

On-road driving is fun.  No doubt.  I have raced sports cars and autocrossed, and I loved it.  I want to do it more… But there is something quite unique with 4wheeling.  It is driving in three dimensions.  Track driving and road driving DO have some connection with altitude.  After all, any passing sports car guys knows that braking distances are extended going downhill and shortened going uphill… but in 4wheeling, “the line” is all about the vertical component.

The same holds true with suspension design…  Travel is measured and controlled in track car design… but it is over such a short range.  Off-road vehicles may have to control the movement of the suspension over 10″, 15″ or even 20+” of travel…  The designs are much more exotic, and the challenges immense.
