101 Cars, Part 14

Lane Bailey - Tuesday, 2 December 2008 01:21

There is fast… and there is scary fast… and then there is just scary.  This car meets at least one of the last two.

If is seriously fast.  It can hit 62mph in 2.5 seconds, and 99 mph in 5 seconds (converted from kilometers per hour).  That is nasty fast.  Weighing in at just 1200 pounds, and having 575 hp, it has a power/weight ratio that would make most race cars blush.  Top speed is over 205 mph with a low downforce set-up, and with a higher downforce set-up, it is capable of 3g cornering… at speed (downforce has advantages).  It can stop with 3g deceleration.  Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear likened it to hitting a tree.

It also has an ugly habit of bursting into flames or disassembling itself for the press.  British car show Fifth Gear had a reviewer burned, Top Gear experienced a panel of the floor coming loose and part of the suspension came loose for a Dutch journalist.  Oh yeah, the throttle stuck open at the goowood Festival of Speed while the car was being demonstrated.

But it is the fastest road car to be on Top Gear’s track, although they pulled the time because it couldn’t drive over a speed bump.  The company claims that the production cars can, with their adjustable suspension.
