101 Cars, Part 15
Henry Ford II wanted a sports car. He wanted a seriously nasty sports car… a championship caliber sports car. So, like many middle aged men, he tried to buy one. Except, since he ran Ford, and wanted a Ferrari (more specifically he wanted the championships that Ferrari was winning). So, Henry Ford II tried to buy Ferrari from Enzo Ferrari. Enzo was having NONE of it. The people that made the Falcon were NOT going to own Ferrari.
So, Henry decided that Ford WOULD win the championships that Ferrari was winning. Cost was not an issue. Winning was the issue. The outgrowth of that was the Ford GT40. Beginning in 1964, Ford was campaigning what is still one of the most beautiful cars ever made. In 1966, Ford won the 24 Hours of LeMans… 1 – 2 – 3. Sweep. And then in 1967 they won again. And in 1968. And the very same car that won in 1968 won again in 1969. Four years.
It was also one of the first members of the 200mph production street car club. Yes, you could go to your Ford dealer and BUY one of these absolute beasts… in Great Britain… for about $18,500!
