101 Cars… Part 27

Lane Bailey - Saturday, 3 January 2009 12:41

This one is a little different.  It was actually my daily driver and Auto-X car from 1989 until 1994…  It was certainly a fun ride, but I also think it has significance.  On several points.

Shelby Charger
  • It brought Carroll Shelby back to the forefront… working with his old pal Lee Iaccoca, no less.
  • It brought high performance front wheel drive cars to the front burner in the US.
  • It helped to bring Chrysler back from the brink… not as the car for the masses, but as the “evolution” of that car.

Mine was built in 1985.  It was a Shelby Charger Turbo.

I had a lot of fun with that car.  it was quick, got reasonable mileage and was pretty competitive locally in SCCA Solo II.  Mine was black with the silver stripe.  Personally, I liked it better after  sprayed it all black… with blacked out wheels… but that is just me.

The 2.2L Turbo motor (and that 2.2 did EVERYTHING for Chrysler) put out 150hp.  It would run 0-60 in about 7 seconds… a little quicker on the BFG Comp T/A R1s or Yokohama A-008RSs that I raced with.
