101 Cars, Part 28… Video Sunday

Lane Bailey - Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:52

This was the first car I loved.  I don’t know why… it only had a 50hp 4 cylinder.  It couldn’t be because of amazing light weight… it weighed 4500 pounds.  Nor stellar acceleration… 0-60 in 29 seconds.  It didn’t have swoopy lines.

The year was 1911… and the car was to be the Stutz Bearcat.  But in 1911 it was the Stutz Indy 500 entry.  It wouldn’t be the Bearcat until 1914 or so (some say there were Bearcats as early as 1912).  It would be built until 1917.

It was a striped down racer for the streets.  No doors, nor windshield (except the “monocle”).  It didn’t have a roof… or provisions for a roof… or even a way to put a roof on it.

But, for 1911-1917, it was fast.  In 1912, entered in 30 races, Bearcats won 25 of them.  Cannon Ball Baker raced one from Los Angeles to New York City in 11 days, 7 hours and 15 minutes.  Stunning at the time…
