In days past, most bodywork was done in lead. Plastic filler, or lightweight filler wasn’t in wide use. And in the 1950s and 60s, custom car builders were making miracles in lead. They were chopping tops, frenching tail lights, shaving the chrome and throwing flames.
Basically, the definition extends to lowered cruisers built from 1939 until around 1964… after that, they are generally considered Low-Riders. Before 1939, they would be Fat Fenders, although some Flat Fenders were built until 1947ish. It is all about the style…
