101 Cars, Part 34
The year was 1971… and anyone could walk into their local Lincoln-Mercury dealer and buy a true exotic car… the kind of exotic that Elvis would drive (before shooting it in the driveway when it wouldn’t start).
It was exotic in almost every way. At its introduction, the panels fit poorly, rust was a problem, Ford had trouble keeping them running at the test track. But the look is still beautiful. It was mid-engined with rear wheel drive. A rock band even took their name from the car.
Ford stopped importing them in 1975. DeTomaso continued production until 1992… They built the Pantera for 22 years. Sure, they modernized it, but it was the same basic car… and it held up well… design wise.
Back around 1998 I was seriously looking at one. The seller had blown the motor, and the interior was rough. It was priced at $6,000… the seller didn’t know that it was powered by a normal Ford 351 Cleveland, and parts were available ANYWHERE. Engine parts, anyway. And performance parts.
