101 Cars, Part 40… F40

I like supercars.  Almost everyone likes supercars.  But there is a certain kind of supercar that I like the most.  Not a model, not a brand… a type.  My type is barely contained race cars.  Not just really fast, but rude around the edges, crude, a bit uncomfortable… and seriously nasty fast.

As a bonus, low production, high price and nothing to check on the option sheet are niceties.

One of my all time favorites is the Ferrari F40.  There were to be 400 of them, but they were popular… 1315 of them were built… mostly red.  They were supposed to be $400,000… in 1987.  But, with production limited and demand through the roof, some buyers paid as much as $1.5M.  And for the time, they got a seriousl performance car.

The 2.9L engine put out 471hp.  Weighing only about 2400lbs, the car could sprint from 0-62 as fast as 3.2 seconds.  And it was the first road legal production car to break 200mph.

What they didn’t come with included:

  • carpet (passengers would mess it up, right?)
  • stereo (they made music on their own)
  • roll-up windows (although they were retro-fitted to some cars)
  • door handles (who wants out?)

The windshields were a light plastic and the cars DID have A/C.  The windows were fixed in the up position, and there was a sliding porthole for tolls, drive-thrus, etc.  The car had A/C because it was the only way to cool the interior.

[...] But of course, it has changed over time.  And some think that the ultimate 911 was the Group B 959.  In itthe short time they were produced, from 1986 to 1989, they were the ultimate road Porsche. The only other car with similar performance was the Ferrari F40. [...]

Lane’s New Video Channel

I have just struck a deal with The Video Connector to provide video content for my sites. Look for lots of cool videos from Tara and TJ from Reel Productions. They have been the providers of my video tours for a couple of years now, and really have a handle on the real estate market. Enjoy.
