Here comes the Judge…
In 1964, Pontiac decided to shoehorn their 389CI engine from the full size Catalina and Bonneville into the mid-sized Tempest. GM actually had a policy which limited cars of the Tempest’s size from having more than a 330CI engine… but they found a loophole and got it done.
The Pontiac GTO was born… Performance got better and better through the 1960s, as well as the reputation of the car. And then in 1968, a whole new series of the car (total redesign) came out. Ram Air options, disk brakes, body colored front bumpers… all of these things became more popular with this generation GTO.
And then in 1969, the Judge was born… Originally it was to be a low cost GTO to compete with the Plymouth Road Runners, but morphed into a premium package with the highest performance options. And 5 lucky folks bought GTO Judge Convertibles with the Ram Air IV package… the rarest of GTOs.
In 1970, the 455 became an available engine. And in 1971, things started to go the wrong direction. Insurance company rules made these hard to get coverage for… in 1972, power options started to dwindle as GM prepared for the loss of leaded gasoline. And the Judge left the building…
