A Shadow of What it Once Was… GM

Lane Bailey - Monday, 21 December 2009 08:33

The news this week was that Saab was on the block… first the sale block, then the chopping block.  Now there are a couple of possibilities that might mean that Saab won’t go the way of Saturn, Oldsmobile and Pontiac.  Maybe closer to the way of Hummer, though…

  • Oldsmobile, 1897 – 2004.  The first of the recent GM brands to be snuffed… It was the third oldest auto brand, and the oldest in America when it was phased out in 2004 by GM.
  • Pontiac, 1926 – 2010.  It was the performance brand of GM.  GTO, G8, Trans-Am... all gone.
  • Saturn, 1985 – 2010.  Started as a response to the rise of Japanese cars in the US… 15 years too late.  Roger Penske almost saved the brand… but not quite.
  • Saab, 1947 – 2010?  From its beginnings as an aero company, the built unique cars…
  • Hummer, 1992 – 2009.  Now Hummer is a Chinese brand…  That’s just wrong.

I wonder how long Buick has… I don’t think Tiger is helping them anymore.
