I love Jeeps… I think that they are VERY cool vehicles. In fact, not only is the Jeep credited as one of the decisive tools that helped the US win World War II, the Modern Museum of Art (MOMA) in New York has displayed a 1941 Jeep GP and a 1953 M38A1. These are the militarized versions of the CJ3A and the CJ5.

Even the Newest Jeep Wrangler JKs can easily trace their lineage back to the original WWII Jeeps. Their simple, rugged and utilitarian designs have always been of the ‘form follows function’ school.
One of the things that has kept the Jeep popular has been owners modifying them to specifically suit their purposes. Bigger engines, heavier duty axles and bigger tires have always been common way to modify a Jeep…. I had a friend whose first vehicle was a 1951 CJ3A with a 1965 Ford 289 V8. More recently, I know a lot of folks that have taken 4 cylinder YJ and TJ Wranglers and put V8s in place of the little motor. Bigger axles have always had to follow…
But, the power of the later model 4 cylinders (like the 2.5L fuel injected motor found in late model TJ Wranglers) and stock TJ axles (Dana 30 and Dana 35 or Dana 44) would be tremendous upgrades for a 1940s or 1950s vintage CJ2A or CJ3A. And that would be a really cool rig.
- 2.5L fuel injected engine
- 5 speed overdrive transmission
- Dana 30 High Pinion front axle
- Dana 44 Rear axle
- ARB lockers front and rear
- TJ style coil spring suspension
- moderate lift… 35″ tires
Aside from the listed updates, the Jeep would have a stock outward appearance… nothing flashy or wild, maybe even a military inspired olive drab paint scheme. I actually have a set of military ‘blackout’ lights in the garage that would look pretty cool on a rig like this.
