Thinking of Scouting?

- Image via Wikipedia
School is almost ready to start here in Gwinnett County. It is only a couple of weeks away… and that means that school activities will be starting, too.
Since one of mine is going into 1st Grade, he is old enough to start in Cub Scouts. He can be a Tiger Cub. And while the ‘Roundup’ is still a few weeks away, we actually found a Pack and started getting involved a few weeks ago. In fact, my wife and I volunteered to be Den Leaders.
The Pack that we found is part of the Sweetwater District of the NE Ga Council. And the Sweetwater District just rolled out a new tool on their website to help parents find a Pack, Troop, Crew, Team or Post for their Scout. Basically, if you are in the Sweetwater District, which covers Walton County and much of Southern Gwinnett County (east of I-85), you can use this tool to find the units that are closest.
Cub Scouts are arranged in Packs. Boy Scouts are in Troops. There are also Venturing Crews, Varsity Teams and Explorer Posts.
Scouting is a great outlet for boys and girls. It teaches responsibility, manners and confidence.
My son is looking forward to getting more involved in Scouting. We have been to a couple of events with the Pack, but no Den based activities yet (they generally are inactive during the summer, but the Packs often have several activities and there are also camp opportunities).
I think we are going to have a great year!
Buy a Toilet, Get back some Cash!
Right now there are several areas of North Georgia, including Gwinnett County, that are issuing rebates for ‘water saver’ toilets.
While this might not be terribly exciting, it is pretty cool… especially when combined with a deal at Costco on one of the listed toilets…
7 Things the Builder forgot to put in Your Garage…
Even the best new construction garages I’ve found are lacking… but one day a builder will come along and turn out a proper garage. In the mean time… until builders start coinsulting me about these things… here is a list of things that you should be ready to correct.
Gwinnett County v Gwinnett’s Cities…
Effective on March 1st, the issue between Gwinnett and 15 of its cities has been upgraded by the State of Georgia. The 15 cities and Gwinnett are now listed with the state as No Longer Qualified Local Governments.
Oh Garbage! again…
Late in 2008, Gwinnett County, GA, announced the implementation of a new Waste Management Plan. I wrote about the announcement here… You can check out the costs and so forth there…
Just a few weeks later, the plan was killed in court. The trash haulers that weren’t selected successfully sued the county to stop the plan. The plan was to take effect on January 2nd, 2009.
It’s Baaack…
On March 2nd, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved the plan. It has been slightly modified, but is largely the same plan. Instead of two haulers dividing up the county, now there are five haulers. The plan is expected to start effective July 1st, 2010.
On the plus side, there should be curbside pick-up for more recyclable materials. Costs are projected to be almost the same as they are for most private contracts.
Will it hold? We’ll see…
Lane’s New Video Channel
I have just struck a deal with The Video Connector to provide video content for my sites. Look for lots of cool videos from Tara and TJ from Reel Productions. They have been the providers of my video tours for a couple of years now, and really have a handle on the real estate market. Enjoy.
