Well, the last installment we looked at the boss Mustang, and I was almost going to lump the Cougar Elimonator in there… but they really were quite different, even though they shared many components.  The Cougar was Mercury’s version of the Mustang… but they had different personalities.

The biggest problem with Elimonators is that unless they have a G-code engine (Boss 302), they are hard to verify.  The Eliminator package doesn’t show up on the data plate…

But, you have to love the look…

The other thing about Cougar Eliminators is that they are still much more ‘underground’ than many of the other muscle cars fo the era… of course, that is part of their coolness.

101 Cars… Part 63…

Boss 429 engine

Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday.  I think that Henry Ford must have thought that up when he funded the 999…  And by the time Ford rolled out the Boss Mustangs, it was probably painted on the walls in Dearborn.

For the 1969 and 1970 model years, Ford made the Boss 302.  At the same time, they also produced the Boss 429.  The Boss 302 took aim at SCCA Trans Am racing.  The 1969 was a beast.  It didn’t like low engine speeds or cheap gas.  It was kind of peaky and took a skilled driver that understood the car.  Only 1,628 were built in 1969.  It was a great track car, but not the car to run up to the grocery store.

In 1970, Ford dialed it back a touch.  The car was a little friendlier, but still a competent performer.  While the first year production cars were relatively unknown, 7,013 of them were made for 1970.

The Boss 429 was designed to go after NHRA Drag Racing fame.  The engine also needed to be certified for NASCAR.  Only 1,358 (859 and 499) of them were built in two years.  They were considerably more expensive, as the engine bay had to be widened and lengthened in order to fit the motor.
