Photo Friday… Cooler than Cool…

Coach Krystal with little J

I LIKE scooting across the ice... it's slippery!

Everyone should take a shot at ice skating. It is the coolest thing you can do on a hot day. And it’s fun.

Those of you that are regular readers know that my older son (in the black helmet in the pic) plays ice hockey. Well, my younger son has been all about learning to skate like Big Brother… so, he’s there in the white helmet. We have to give him some props, he isn’t even 3 years old, yet.

Coach Krystal volunteered to help get him started. She has coached Garrett since he was 4 years old. She has even coached him at hockey camp.

She got him out there, and he has been talking about how much he liked skating… just like his big brother. Mostly what he wanted to do was scoot across the ice.

Krystal gave us some pointers on how to get Jackson to be more confident in his skates, and so he gets to walk around the house sometimes in ice skates (with blade guards on). It helps him with his balance. The best part is that Coach Krystal really likes working with the kids. Mine both love her, and look forward to skating with her. At the same time, she can push them to try a little harder.

We’ll let the little one practice at home for a while before we put him back out on the ice.

C’mon… you don’t want to be out-skated by a three year old, do you? Call Krystal for some lessons and get out there. She coaches at the Duluth Ice Forum. It’s really cool.

Is $1,000,000 Burning a Hole in Your Pocket?

A Penske Porsche RS Spyder leading a Dyson Por...

Let’s just assume for a minute that you are sitting there in your office or at home and you have $1,000,000 just dying to be invested in a new (to you) home.  And then let’s assume for a few minutes that you’d love to do that here in Gwinnett County, GA.  What can you get for a million bucks here in Gwinnett?

There are a few homes listed for around $1,000,000 in Gwinnett County, GA.  I limited it to homes that were priced within $1,000 of the magic number.  The six houses all came in between $999,000 and $999,900.

Three of the homes are located in Chateau Elan, in Braselton, GA.  You can’t really get much further north in the county, but it is a truly magnificent area.  Chateau Elan is built around the winery of the same name started by Donald Panoz.  That would be the same Donald Panoz that owns Road Atlanta, just a little north of the winery, and the American Le Mans Series in sports car racing.  There is also an Inn, event facility and several golf courses.

The other three homes are a little more spread out around the county, but all are near the I-85 corridor.  They are in Buford, Duluth and Suwanee.  This particular Buford home isn’t in a subdivision, but could have easily been a home on Lake Lanier.  The homes in Buford that are on the lake are on what is called “South Lake”, which is the biggest area of the lake.  There are some exceptional homes in this area.  Duluth is home to the Sugarloaf Country Club, where many of Atlanta’s sports stars and celebrities live.  The home that is currently in that narrow price range is in another neighborhood called Sweet Bottom Plantation.  Sweet Bottom Plantation is nestled on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, with many homes having styling reminiscent of New Orleans, LA, or Charleston, SC.  Our Suwanee home is located in Belmore Estates.  Suwanee is also home to The River Club and Bear’s Best Estates.  It also bleeds over into Forsyth County and a little bit in Fulton County.

Here in Gwinnett County, GA, homes priced at $1,000,000 are pretty cool. That buys a LOT of house; 6,000 to 9,000 square feet.  They have terrace level rooms, finished to very high standards.  Three car garages are a minimum, with 4+ being more common.  Most of the homes have 5 or 6 bedrooms, but every once in a while, a 4 bedroom home will sneak in.  Most of the homes have swimming pools on the property, as well.  Only the home not in a subdivision had a significant amount of land, 14 acres.  The others were all generally under one acre.  Hardwood floors, central vacs, stone and brick, updated kitchens and high end cabinetry and appliances are pretty standard.

Right now, in Gwinnett County, the luxury market is pretty much buyer driven, too.  We do see some foreclosures and short sales, but a larger percentage of buyers at this level paid cash than at lower price points.  That doesn’t mean that there aren’t deals, though. Homes that are selling in this price range are often homes that would have sold for upwards of $1.5M just a few years ago.

Kids with Something To Say… Part I

I volunteer for Junior Achievement, and I love every minute of it.  I have a couple of 5th grade classes at a local Elementary School, and just started with a High School class, too.

This is one of my 5th grade classes… I’ll post up another later in the week.  I jumped these kids with this.  I literally pulled out my phone to capture the video in the middle of the lesson we were working on today.  We had a lot of fun in the class, and the kids (especially off-camera) expressed how much they enjoy having new people come into the class to talk with them.

Here they are:

Long Pokey Sticks and Horses

In the continuing quest to find fun things to do around Atlanta and Gwinnett County, I spent a moment talking about Medieval Times at Discover Mills.

I’ve taken the family there a couple of times and we have had a great time.  My ‘almost 7 year old’ LOVED watching the horses, as well as the sword fights.  The biggest issue with taking kids is tempering their enthusiasm about swords…  What wasn’t an issue was getting him to dig into the “finger food”.  The whole menu, with the exception of the soup, was eaten without silverware.  It was pretty good, too.

Check out the website for special deals.  They also seem to have regular deals that are promoted on billboards around Gwinnett County.  In the past, when we have looked at the deals, there was a deal on the billboard that wasn’t listed on the website.  Not always better… just different.

Photo Friday… This Little Piggy Went to Market

Looking over the wares

Last summer, Lilburn, GA, began a weekly Farmer’s Market every Friday from 4-8pm.  Booths were set up on Railroad Ave., next the the Police Station and City Park.  We made it out a few times with the kids to pick up some fresh treats… and see some neighbors.  One of the things that makes Lilburn seem like a small town is that we run into our childrens’ schoolmates, fellow Cub Scout Parents, our neighbors and other folks we know in the community… seemingly everywhere.

It looks like the Lilburn Farmer’s Market will be back again this year.  It should be starting around June 3rd.  That is just me guessing, though…

If you’d like to live in a community like this, I’d love to help you find the perfect home for you.  We have great people, great schools, and excellent access to all that the Atlanta area has to offer.
