Photo Friday… Kicking It @ Hockey Camp

Random Thoughts and Images from Hockey Camp...

G in the Line-Up...

Yes, I am a “Hockey Dad”. My 7 year old son has been playing hockey since 2008 (and yes, that means he started at age 4).  This is his 3rd year skating in the Come And Get It Hockey Camp (we call it CAGI Hockey).  He gets a week at the beginning of June and another in July.  I don’t know there is ANYTHING he looks forward to as much as hockey camp with Coach Sully.  This is his 3rd summer skating in the CAGI Hockey Camp.

Today is the last day for the June camp.  July’s camp will run from July 11th-15th.  And let me tell you… if you have a youth hockey player that can make it here for the camp… GET THEM HERE.  They will love it.  If you like hockey, whether you have a youth player or not, come over to the Duluth Ice Forum and watch some kids pour their heart into being better players.  These kids range in age from 4 years old to high school.  This afternoon (June 10th, 2011) the kids will be scrimmaging from 3:30-4:30. (I imagine that the timing will be similar for the July camp… but check back.)

I have been there for most of the ice sessions… there are 3 each day.  And the kids are amazing to watch.  Some of these kids surprise the Atlanta Thrashers that pop in during the day to watch.  There are some kids with SERIOUS skills.  Other players are more casual, but for camp, they push themselves pretty hard.

And the kid in the pics is mine… from the 2010 Camps.

My older son LOVES to play ice hockey.  And all year long, the events he looks forward to most are the Come And Get It Hockey Camps.  He skates one in June and one in July.

The guy responsible for running the CAGI Camp is Dan Sullivan, formerly of the Gwinnett Gladiators.  Coach Sully (as the kids call him) is a heck of a guy and runs a GREAT camp.  It really is a family affair, too.  Dan’s brother and sister are involved, and his wife Liz is there every day checking the kids in and making sure everything off the ice runs smoothly.

This is my son’s 3rd year at the camp… and he’s only 7 years old.  He skated his first camp when he was just 5.  There is a core group of youngsters that all started skating at the same time and they still enjoy getting on the ice together.  Now though, there are even younger players coming up behind them.

There are a lot of unique things about CAGI Hockey (like that parents can drop their kids off all day and food is provided), but my favorite is the level of instruction the kids get.  The instructors are guys that played (or still play)  professional and college hockey.  Of course, it goes a little deeper than that…  The instructors really work with the kids.  They get to know them, eat with them, play with them and mentor them.

Even though I could drop off my son and leave him for the day, I like to hang out and watch the kids skate.  I’ve gotten to know the coaches and some of their families.  I have been blessed to get to know some of the other parents, too.  And best of all, I have gotten to know some pretty cool and special kids that have skated at the camp.

Here is the post from 2 years ago… when I wrapped up the first camp.

Photo Friday… If it Bleeds, It Leads…

Mud4Blood

Mud4Blood time!

It’s that time of year again… Mud4Blood time.

Each year, for the last 8 years, the GBR4WD Club has hosted one of the biggest one day blood drives in the region for LifeSouth.  The goal this year is to break 200 pints of blood collected at the event.

If you are a local car nut with a cool ride… whether it is a high-riding 4×4, low-riding mini-truck, rat rod, resto-mod or rad bike, or even something completely different… we have a cool show for you.

It doesn’t cost a dime to enter, aside from your gas to drive to Hooters in Kennesaw.  We don’t want your money… we want your blood.

If you like to see the coolest cars and the coolest people in the Atlanta Metro area car scene, it doesn’t cost a dime to show up… aside from your gas.  We want you blood.

If you want to have a shot at the HUGE raffle, it doesn’t cost a dime to get a ticket.  We want your blood.

Do you sense a theme here?

It’s all about the blood drive, but the blood drive isn’t the whole thing…  There are cool vendors offering excellent deals, too.  And if you get hungry, it IS at Hooters… right by Cowboys.

J likes cool cars...

So cool the average 3 years knows.

It is getting to be that time of year… Car Show Time.

As we move from Spring into Summer, the car show circuit heats up.  And this is the best time of year, too.  It hasn’t gotten as hot as it will be in July, but it’s warm enough to be casual.

I’m always surprised by the quantity of cool cars that can show up at almost any local show.  Hit up the shows in Tucker, Duluth, Cumming and Woodstock and you will see a completely different crop of cars.

The other thing I really like about the local shows is that the owners are right there… and they LOVE to talk about their cool cars… and they often invite the kids to sit in them.

And kids LOVE cool cars.  Both of my boys love hitting a good car show.  It’s really funny… over and over I hear, “I want THIS one.”

Grab the family and get out to a local car show.  There is likely one not too far away.

And if you are in Kennesaw, GA on May 28th, stop by the Hooters on Cobb Parkway.  Drop off a pint of blood and see some cool rides.  Look for me, I’ll be there.

Wayback Wednesday… Car Show THIS Weekend…

Busy Day... Part 1... Smoke Rise Baptist Churc...

Kind of odd that for a “Wayback” post I would talk about an upcoming car show…  But the show happens around the first Saturday in May each year… and so THIS Saturday is the day.

Smokerise Baptist Church is having their 11th Annual Smokerise Car Show on Saturday from 9am until 3pm.  Registration runs from 9am until Noon… so there might be a few cars that don’t show up until late.  Judging runs from Noon until 3pm.

And check out this link for pictures from last year’s show.  There were some pretty cool rides on hand… and that was with showers threatening all day.

BTW, the other car show mentioned in that post, Mud4Blood, will be on May 28th.  That one promises to rock, too…
