Photo Friday… Kicking It @ Hockey Camp

Random Thoughts and Images from Hockey Camp...

G in the Line-Up...

Yes, I am a “Hockey Dad”. My 7 year old son has been playing hockey since 2008 (and yes, that means he started at age 4).  This is his 3rd year skating in the Come And Get It Hockey Camp (we call it CAGI Hockey).  He gets a week at the beginning of June and another in July.  I don’t know there is ANYTHING he looks forward to as much as hockey camp with Coach Sully.  This is his 3rd summer skating in the CAGI Hockey Camp.

Today is the last day for the June camp.  July’s camp will run from July 11th-15th.  And let me tell you… if you have a youth hockey player that can make it here for the camp… GET THEM HERE.  They will love it.  If you like hockey, whether you have a youth player or not, come over to the Duluth Ice Forum and watch some kids pour their heart into being better players.  These kids range in age from 4 years old to high school.  This afternoon (June 10th, 2011) the kids will be scrimmaging from 3:30-4:30. (I imagine that the timing will be similar for the July camp… but check back.)

I have been there for most of the ice sessions… there are 3 each day.  And the kids are amazing to watch.  Some of these kids surprise the Atlanta Thrashers that pop in during the day to watch.  There are some kids with SERIOUS skills.  Other players are more casual, but for camp, they push themselves pretty hard.

And the kid in the pics is mine… from the 2010 Camps.

My older son LOVES to play ice hockey.  And all year long, the events he looks forward to most are the Come And Get It Hockey Camps.  He skates one in June and one in July.

The guy responsible for running the CAGI Camp is Dan Sullivan, formerly of the Gwinnett Gladiators.  Coach Sully (as the kids call him) is a heck of a guy and runs a GREAT camp.  It really is a family affair, too.  Dan’s brother and sister are involved, and his wife Liz is there every day checking the kids in and making sure everything off the ice runs smoothly.

This is my son’s 3rd year at the camp… and he’s only 7 years old.  He skated his first camp when he was just 5.  There is a core group of youngsters that all started skating at the same time and they still enjoy getting on the ice together.  Now though, there are even younger players coming up behind them.

There are a lot of unique things about CAGI Hockey (like that parents can drop their kids off all day and food is provided), but my favorite is the level of instruction the kids get.  The instructors are guys that played (or still play)  professional and college hockey.  Of course, it goes a little deeper than that…  The instructors really work with the kids.  They get to know them, eat with them, play with them and mentor them.

Even though I could drop off my son and leave him for the day, I like to hang out and watch the kids skate.  I’ve gotten to know the coaches and some of their families.  I have been blessed to get to know some of the other parents, too.  And best of all, I have gotten to know some pretty cool and special kids that have skated at the camp.

Here is the post from 2 years ago… when I wrapped up the first camp.

Wayback Wednesday… Thanks Again, Ms. Curtis!

Ms. Curtis with my younger son

I hope I get a cool teacher like Ms. Curtis, too!

Last year I wrote a post as a ‘Thank You’ to my older son’s Kindergarten Teacher, Ms. Curtis.  G has been in a CLE (Continuous Learning Environment) class for the last two years, so he had Ms. Curtis again this year.  And again, she has earned a hearty Thank You for he efforts, compassion and leadership.

Unfortunately, the Multi-Age CLE class is going away, but Ms. Curtis isn’t.  She’ll still be at Arcado Elementary in Lilburn, GA, teaching Kindergarteners how to read, write, do math and integrate into elementary school.

G benefited greatly from the CLE class environment.  During his first year, as a Kindergartener, he had great mentoring from the 1st Grade students in the class.  Instead of just being taught by the teacher, the 1st Graders demonstrated leadership with the younger kids and helped teach them.

This year, as a 1st Grader, he had a couple of Kindergarteners that he mentored.  This gave him the opportunity to be a leader and demonstrate his skills and knowledge.

We all know that one of the best ways to learn is to teach… and this class leveraged that to great results.  The Kindergarteners got great peer-to-peer instruction from their friends, while the 1st Graders had the opportunity to teach and learn more effectively, while also building leadership skills.

Feel free to read last year’s post (linked above and through the picture).  There are several examples of ways that Ms. Curtis maintains great communication with the parents, helping to foster a better learning environment for her students.

Finally, one thing that we have really enjoyed is the opportunity to visit the classroom at any time.  With my Junior Achievement activities at Arcado, I was in the school every week for much of the year.  I took advantage of the opportunity to drop in unannounced numerous times.  I was always welcomed… and always impressed by the multitude of ways she engaged the class.  My wife and I (often along with our younger son) also attended many “special event” days in the class.  J was able to play, and the lessons in leadership became quite apparent.

All of the kids, Kindergarteners and 1st Graders, took time to help the younger kids.  Many younger siblings visited the class.  They would play with the toys and entertain themselves with books and other learning tools in the class.  The older kids were always patient and worked toward helping the youngsters…

Thanks Ms. Curtis. Thank you for the time and effort you put into teaching my children.  Thank you for the patience and compassion that you showed them.  Thank you for all of the work that you took on to make sure each child had the best opportunity to learn.

J likes cool cars...

So cool the average 3 years knows.

It is getting to be that time of year… Car Show Time.

As we move from Spring into Summer, the car show circuit heats up.  And this is the best time of year, too.  It hasn’t gotten as hot as it will be in July, but it’s warm enough to be casual.

I’m always surprised by the quantity of cool cars that can show up at almost any local show.  Hit up the shows in Tucker, Duluth, Cumming and Woodstock and you will see a completely different crop of cars.

The other thing I really like about the local shows is that the owners are right there… and they LOVE to talk about their cool cars… and they often invite the kids to sit in them.

And kids LOVE cool cars.  Both of my boys love hitting a good car show.  It’s really funny… over and over I hear, “I want THIS one.”

Grab the family and get out to a local car show.  There is likely one not too far away.

And if you are in Kennesaw, GA on May 28th, stop by the Hooters on Cobb Parkway.  Drop off a pint of blood and see some cool rides.  Look for me, I’ll be there.

Photo Friday… Talk To Some Kids…

One of the coolest things I get to do is to talk with school kids about business…  Oddly, they seem to like it, too.  We talk about taxes, business strategy and skills that may be valued in the future.

Junior Achievement is a great operation, which has programs for kids from kindergarten to high school.  In fact, today, as this post is being released, I am in a classroom with 8th graders talking about making solid choices for the future.

There are a lot of folks that criticize our schools.  They talk about how kids come out of school unprepared for life in the real world.  Business and economics are a couple of the areas that many of those complaints seem to be about.

I am NOT the expert.  I’m not the final word in any of these subjects.  But, I have a different set of skills and experiences than the teachers.  I would bet that you have a set of skills and experiences that could compliment what the kids are getting i
