Photo Friday… Talk To Some Kids…

One of the coolest things I get to do is to talk with school kids about business…  Oddly, they seem to like it, too.  We talk about taxes, business strategy and skills that may be valued in the future.

Junior Achievement is a great operation, which has programs for kids from kindergarten to high school.  In fact, today, as this post is being released, I am in a classroom with 8th graders talking about making solid choices for the future.

There are a lot of folks that criticize our schools.  They talk about how kids come out of school unprepared for life in the real world.  Business and economics are a couple of the areas that many of those complaints seem to be about.

I am NOT the expert.  I’m not the final word in any of these subjects.  But, I have a different set of skills and experiences than the teachers.  I would bet that you have a set of skills and experiences that could compliment what the kids are getting i

Photo Friday… Almost Time to Get Muddy…

Mud4BloodIt is coming…  Mud4Blood8 will be held on May 28th, 2011 at the Hooters in Kennesaw, GA.

Each year, the GBR4WD club hosts this event, which brings together auto and 4wd enthusiasts from all over the Atlanta area.  The reason for the gathering is a blood collection for LifeSouth.

But that isn’t the only thing going on… there is a GIANT car and truck show with everything from big 4x4s to low-riders.  There are customs and restos.  There are also vendor booths for all types of auto enthusiast needs… and food.  Last, but certainly not least, there is a HUGE raffle with food and parts.  Did I mention that it’s HUGE?  And the only way to get a ticket for the raffle is to make a blood donation attempt.

Come out all day, or just squeeze over for a few minutes to donate a pint, get a juice pouch and some Nutter Butters.

Photo Friday… Rope=Bridge

G on a rope bridgeLast weekend was the annual ScoutBlast at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds.  The Northeast Georgia Council holds the event each year to allow the Scout from different Packs and Troops to get together as well as allow the public to see what sort of cool things they can come up with in camp.

There were:

  • rope bridges
  • a kayaking pond
  • a “Cub Car” track
  • rod & reel casting
  • a rotating swing
  • compressed air rockets
  • a trebuchet
  • boat building

There were also multiple vendors showing Scouts and leaders, as well as those in the public that might be interested.

The kids were running around and checking out all of the cool things to do, and Scout leaders were looking for ideas for next year’s event.

Events like this are happening all over Gwinnett County most weekends thro0ughout the year.  Not specifically Scouting, but events that might be interesting to you or your kids.  Model train shows, car shows, equestrian events and more.  I try to mention the ones that I am aware of… especially the ones that I get to visit with my family.  Take a look around… the worst that could happen is meetng a new friend that shares your hobbies or interests.

Photo Friday… Have You Tested Your Lifeboat?

Last week for Spring Break, we took a quick cruise.  It was a wonderful time, and the kids were thrilled at all of the new experiences.  And there were a few things that I hadn’t noticed before.

One of them was the crew pulling lifeboats and testing them while we were in port in the Bahamas.  It was a simple thing, really.  The would drop a boat and motor it around for a while, then switch out for a new one.  The ship (from another line) parked next to us was doing the same thing.

Truthfully, it was somewhat comforting.  At the beginning of the cruise, we did the mandatory lifeboat drill.  After parading down from the stateroom, we lined up on the deck, under the lifeboats.  It was nice to know that the next link in the chain was tested regularly, and that the crew had some practice operating them.  The last thing any of us would want would be for the crew to have to read the instructions in order to launch the lifeboat…

And it got me thinking…

Have I tested MY lifeboat?  And the answer is that I don’t really have one.  I am up on the high wire without a net…  Obviously, I need to make some changes to MY life plan.

BTW, it was a gorgeous day and a wonderful cruise.  We were on the Disney Dream, and had a great time.

Tsunami Warning Sign

Sometimes you just have to wonder...

Last year we went to Myrtle Beach around Thanksgiving to visit with family.

Myrtle Beach, SC Spring Break 2007

I noticed this sign on the beach…  Now, I don’t want to make light of the power and danger involved in a tsunami.  We have all seen the devastation and loss of life from the recent tsunamis in Japan and elsewhere… but the sign strikes me as a little humorous.

Have we reached a point where we have to be told to stay off of the beach when there is a tsunami coming?  And if there are waves like that (which I hear tsunami waves do NOT look like), our hero on the sign is WAY late to begin the running…

Bottom line… the sign is funny, but don’t laugh at a tsunami.
