I ran across something pretty cool today. My son was wandering through a catalog and came across propane powered lawn equipment; blowers, trimmers and mowers. They utilize the small propane canisters that are popular with camping stoves and lanterns.
The major advantage is that they are VERY clean burning. There is WAY less pollution than from two stroke, or even four stroke gasoline powered tools. There is also no evaporative emissions from the canisters. And it isn’t likely that you’d spill gasoline all over the back of the car while bringing home fuel.
Among the side benefits is that there is no need to ‘choke’ the engine for starting, it doesn’t have to be primed and it doesn’t gum up carbs or fuel lines. Another nice thing is that there is no need to ‘winterize’ the tool.
The tools all are supposed to run about two hours on each canister. Honestly, I would need to check out my fuel usage to see how it stacks up cost-wise with my gasoline tools. My first thought is that I get a bit longer in run-time on a gallon, so the propane tool might cost a little more in fuel to operate. But it would depend on the price of the propane fuel, too.
Honestly, if I were in the market for one of the tools the offer, I would seriously consider it in place of a gasoline powered tool. I’m not a huge fan of most of the electrics… they don’t seem to have the power I want… but I am not against a cleaner burning alternative.
