Lilburn and Localism

For a little over a year I have been a member of a real estate social networking site called Active|Rain.  For the whole time there has been a sister platform called Localism.  And also for that whole period of time, Localism has been in a beta stage.

**Side note.  Beta stage means that it wasn’t really done, but was running full speed.**

The beta Localism platform was nice, but wasn’t great.  It pulled a fair amount of search traffic from Google, and that was always great… but it wasn’t sticky.  That means that people would do a search, go to the result, read it and then leave.

The new site isn’t that way.  And it isn’t all about real estate.  Make no doubt, real estate is front and center right now, but as the the site matures, real estate won’t be the center.

So, Localism has been completely redesigned, and it isn’t in beta any more.  And it is pretty cool.

Anyway, on to the point…

Come on in and take a look at Lilburn.  Look around.  Let me know what you think.  I’ll be adding more content, as will all of the other participants.  In fact, ANYONE can join and contribute content for Localism.  Come on in, the water is fine.

Back in the Rally again… Video Sunday

I haven’t done enough WRC videos lately, so I figured it was time for some Rally video again…

And if you wonder what it would be like on the inside… Ride along with Chris Atkinson in 2008 in the Rally Jordan.

Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center

I got the chance this morning to visit the Gwinnett Environmental Center in Buford.  It is a really cool place to visit.  It offers a variety of opportunities for recreation as well as education… and it is a really nice setting.

Ad Homily… my new made up word of the week…

I just can’t help connect different word ocassionally…  So, here it goes.

ad hom·i·nem
(hŏm’ə-něm’, -nəm)  Pronunciation Key
adj.  Appealing to personal considerations rather than to logic or reason: Debaters should avoid ad hominem arguments that question their opponents’ motives.

And then…

hom·i·ly
(hŏm’ə-lē)  Pronunciation Key

  1. A sermon, especially one intended to edify a congregation on a practical matter and not intended to be a theological discourse.
  2. A tedious moralizing lecture or admonition.
  3. An inspirational saying or platitude.

So, as I listen to political debate of the day, I hear these constant moralizing lectures that are attacks on a person rather than on the subject at hand.  And then there are the non-debates, where people just spout slogans that don’t have any meaning…

Get ready to cheer for Lilburn’s Eric Shanteau

Parkview High School alum Eric Shanteau has made the US Olympic Swimming Team, competing in the 200 Meter Breast stroke.  He finished 3rd in the 2004 Trials in both the 200m and 400m Individual Medleys, just barely missing the team.

That, in an of itself, would be an amazing accomplishment. His list of swimming accomplishments is long and illustrious.  Parkview High School records, Georgia State High School records… Take a look here

But, there is something else.  Eric is fighting testicular cancer.  At 24 years old.  No whining.  Instead, he is showing the same determination that has pushed him to acheive all that he has acheived.  NBC published a story about him being inspirational.  No doubt.  He didn’t tell anyone about it until after the Trials.

BTW, his older brother Ryan, one of my clients, was not a swimming slouch either, competing for GA Tech after setting records for Parkview.

So, if you don’t get the chance to watch anything else during the Olympics, tune in and cheer on Eric in the 200 meter Breast stroke.

I’ll post up video and results after the event.  I’ll also try to bug Ryan for some pictures after the event…
