Wayback Wednesday… Car Show THIS Weekend…

Busy Day... Part 1... Smoke Rise Baptist Churc...

Kind of odd that for a “Wayback” post I would talk about an upcoming car show…  But the show happens around the first Saturday in May each year… and so THIS Saturday is the day.

Smokerise Baptist Church is having their 11th Annual Smokerise Car Show on Saturday from 9am until 3pm.  Registration runs from 9am until Noon… so there might be a few cars that don’t show up until late.  Judging runs from Noon until 3pm.

And check out this link for pictures from last year’s show.  There were some pretty cool rides on hand… and that was with showers threatening all day.

BTW, the other car show mentioned in that post, Mud4Blood, will be on May 28th.  That one promises to rock, too…

Mud4BloodIt is coming…  Mud4Blood8 will be held on May 28th, 2011 at the Hooters in Kennesaw, GA.

Each year, the GBR4WD club hosts this event, which brings together auto and 4wd enthusiasts from all over the Atlanta area.  The reason for the gathering is a blood collection for LifeSouth.

But that isn’t the only thing going on… there is a GIANT car and truck show with everything from big 4x4s to low-riders.  There are customs and restos.  There are also vendor booths for all types of auto enthusiast needs… and food.  Last, but certainly not least, there is a HUGE raffle with food and parts.  Did I mention that it’s HUGE?  And the only way to get a ticket for the raffle is to make a blood donation attempt.

Come out all day, or just squeeze over for a few minutes to donate a pint, get a juice pouch and some Nutter Butters.

Let’s take a break from Market Reports in Gwinnett County, GA

And we can talk about cars…  Don’t worry, I have a couple more Gwinnett County, GA, Market Reports coming out starting tomorrow.

I was thinking about project cars (as if I didn’t already have an all-consuming project in the garage currently).  And I got started thinking about what one could do on a modest budget… maybe $5000… or less.  And that led me to eBay, looking at potential projects with “Buy-It-Now” prices between $2000 and $2500.  There were some interesting cars.  These cars are currently available (as I post this) and located near Atlanta, GA.

  • 1958 Chevy Belair 4dr.  Looks interesting, but does have some rust.  Excellent patina, though.
  • 1959 Edsel Ranger.  Seller says it doesn’t have any rust… and it looks reasonably straight in the 3 pictures on eBay.
  • 1985 Chevy K10 4×4.  Lifted on 35″ tires… classic mud truck.  Love the short beds.
  • 1957 Willys CJ-5.  I like it.  I had a 55 M38A1 (the military version of the same Jeep).  Looks reasonable, but EVERYTHING is available for these things.
  • 1971 Dodge D-100.  BIG engine.  Gotta love the 440.  Florida isn’t THAT far, is it?

All of these bad boys need a little work… but they all have the capacity for coolness that separates them from the pack of boring cars that most people buy.

If you get one, let me know how it works out for you.

Wayback Wednesday… Still Boring?

1987-1991 Toyota Camry wagon photographed in U...

Image via Wikipedia

Two whole years ago…  Wow, time flies.

I wrote a post about the Top 10 Most Boring Cars.  It is one that got a lot of attention off of my blog.  I have had a few people comment to me personally about my choices.  I still don’t know how someone can defend the Camry as being ‘non-boring.’

That was a fun list to write.  I like writing car posts…  There are days that I think I would like to make this whole blog about cars and do my real estate writing elsewhere.  I’ve done a few car posts, and they have generally been popular.  My Top 10 Nastiest Vehicles You’ve Never Heard Of post has been one of the most read posts I’ve done.  I can count on it to get 30 or 40 hits a week now… even after three years.

I’d love to hear about cars you think are exceptionally cool… or cars you think are exceedingly boring.

Winter Driving Tips… Georgia Style…

Oak Grove St., Minneapolis, Minnesota
Image via Wikipedia

I will admit that I am a transplanted Northerner.  I grew up in Michigan (and Virginia)… and moved here from Minnesota, 21 years ago.  After 6 winters in MN, I learned a few things about driving in the snow… and after 21 years here in Georgia, I learned a few more things.

First, a Word for Recent Transplanted Northerners

This is NOT the snow you drove in in Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, Denver, St. Louis… whatever.  This is a completely different beast.  To begin with, it is generally wetter, which means that it compacts to something like ice.  The temperatures are often quite conducive to this happening.  The bottom line on that point is that driving the same way here is you might have somewhere colder will likely result in a trip to the ditch.

There is also very little snow removal equipment.  You will NOT see a line of plows running the Interstate highway… in fact, you might not see ANY plows running down the highway.  You will not see plows on neighborhood streets or even secondary roads.  You might see a sand truck on an overpass.  It seems that the primary weapon against frozen roads is the weather… it won’t be cold long.

So, chill out a little…

Next, a Word for My 4 Wheel Drive Friends

Four wheel drive means that you can make your rig go in low traction situations.  That means that you will be going faster when you hit the ditch following the ice covered road.  I am a Jeeper, and I have a full size 4wd truck.  On ice, they don’t do that much better than a Honda…  That isn’t to say that 4wd vehicles aren’t useful.  They absolutely are…  But, they have limitations.  Respect the limitations and you won’t have to dig out your insurance card or suffer the embarrassment of sitting in the ditch while someone drives by in a Buick.

What CAN you do?

  • Honestly, if you don’t really need to get out on the road, don’t.
  • If you are afraid to drive in the snow/ice, don’t.
  • Those prone to panic… don’t drive until things clear up.
  • If you are going to venture out on the roads, dress (or carry clothes) appropriately.  If you are involved in an accident, don’t assume that the Police are going to be able to respond quickly.
  • Make sure that you have a cell phone with a charge on it.
  • Make sure that people know where you are going, your route and when you should arrive.
  • This really isn’t the time to text and drive, talk and drive or rock out on the radio.  As you are driving down the road, the conditions can change and you need to be able to concentrate on driving…  If you hit a patch of glare ice, you won’t have time to tell mom you will call her back.  And you don’t want your girlfriend to hear you scream like a little girl if you spin your car.
  • Keep your fuel tank fairly full.  It is WAY more embarrassing to run out of gas in the snow that to get stuck.
  • Remember that road conditions can be different from spot to spot… patches of ice, patches of clear, slush, etc.

I find that what I like is a consistent surface.  The biggest cause of accidents is trying to change velocity or direction faster than traffic allows.  Right after that would be a change in the road’s traction.

If you are driving on snow that is consistent, you might be sliding a little… but if you are used to that slipping and factor it into your driving, you may have a big problem if you hit a spot of regular pavement.  The same holds true if you you hit a patch of ice when you are driving on mostly snow.

Of course, the biggest problem is changing direction or velocity faster than traction allows.  That means that speeding up, slowing down, turning or changing lanes can all be very dangerous.  Drive smoothly.  Don’t push it.  Try not to accelerate or brake while also turning.

One other little tip for people with rear wheel drive cars or trucks…  Put some weight in the back.  Bags of sand are great for this.  They provide a little weight which helps with traction, and if you get stuck on ice, the sand can put on the ice for traction.

Above all, be safe out there.  Atlanta and Gwinnett  County doesn’t see a lot of winter weather like this… and it usually passes quite fast.  Enjoy the beauty.
