Photo Friday… 3 Tigers and a Chair

Three Tiger Cubs sitting in a chair.  When you are a kid, there isn’t much that is cooler than the campfire on a camping trip.  But the one thing that can make it better is being able to enjoy it with friends.

The guys had been busy all day with hiking, making crafts, setting up camp and dinner.  They even got to cook dinner on a “Leave No Trace” cook-fire.

The leave no trace fire involved setting out a tarp, putting a few inches of dirt on top of the tarp, then building the fire on top of the dirt.  After cooking and letting the charcoal burn completely, the ashes were disposed of in a safe receptacle, while the dirt was spread spread around the area.  We folded up the tarp and put it back in the truck.

Of course, the campfire was in a fire ring that was built by the venue for that purpose.  And before the Cub Scouts left, after camping for the weekend, they walked it and picked up anything that didn’t belong… leaving the site cleaner than when they arrived.

March Madness hasn’t even really arrived, but many are turning their minds to the game of Spring and Summer…  Baseball.  The Atlanta Braves are practicing and playing down at Disney World, and soon the Gwinnett Braves will be playing at CoolRay Field in Lawrenceville.

Of course, getting into town to catch an Atlanta Braves game isn’t that tough for most of us in Gwinnett County, but the G-Braves can be a LOT of fun, too.  Tickets are cheaper.  It is closer.  The venue is smaller and the views are better.  The fans seem to be more into the game than a lot of those at Turner Field.

My mom is a huge baseball fan. I didn’t pick that up from her… I am more of a racing kind of guy.  But, whenever she visits, we have to try to catch a game.  Even for those of us that prefer our sport a little faster, a day at the ballpark can be a pretty good time.

Another of my Junior Achievement classes caught on video saying what they think of the program. These are 5th graders, and they LOVE having someone new come into the class for a few weeks. It doesn’t take a tremendous amount of time; 45 minutes in the classroom, maybe 30-45 minutes of pre-reading the materials and making notes and whatever commute time it takes to get there.

For this group, the commitment ran over 5 weeks. For my high school ethics group, the commitment runs for 7 weeks. I did a class last year that ran 5 hours… in a row. But it was over in one day. I had about 2 hours of prep the evening before.

There are lots of ways to get involved with kids in the community. A lot of us talk about the need for kids to get a more rounded education, and that more money isn’t always the solution. This is my way of putting my mouth where the money was.

I LIKE scooting across the ice... it's slippery!

Everyone should take a shot at ice skating. It is the coolest thing you can do on a hot day. And it’s fun.

Those of you that are regular readers know that my older son (in the black helmet in the pic) plays ice hockey. Well, my younger son has been all about learning to skate like Big Brother… so, he’s there in the white helmet. We have to give him some props, he isn’t even 3 years old, yet.

Coach Krystal volunteered to help get him started. She has coached Garrett since he was 4 years old. She has even coached him at hockey camp.

She got him out there, and he has been talking about how much he liked skating… just like his big brother. Mostly what he wanted to do was scoot across the ice.

Krystal gave us some pointers on how to get Jackson to be more confident in his skates, and so he gets to walk around the house sometimes in ice skates (with blade guards on). It helps him with his balance. The best part is that Coach Krystal really likes working with the kids. Mine both love her, and look forward to skating with her. At the same time, she can push them to try a little harder.

We’ll let the little one practice at home for a while before we put him back out on the ice.

C’mon… you don’t want to be out-skated by a three year old, do you? Call Krystal for some lessons and get out there. She coaches at the Duluth Ice Forum. It’s really cool.

I volunteer for Junior Achievement, and I love every minute of it.  I have a couple of 5th grade classes at a local Elementary School, and just started with a High School class, too.

This is one of my 5th grade classes… I’ll post up another later in the week.  I jumped these kids with this.  I literally pulled out my phone to capture the video in the middle of the lesson we were working on today.  We had a lot of fun in the class, and the kids (especially off-camera) expressed how much they enjoy having new people come into the class to talk with them.
