Come and Get It…

Today was Garrett’s first day of Hockey Camp.  And he had a ball.

Dan Sullivan of the Gwinnett Gladiators, and some other area “hockey-types” have been putting together a new camp at the Duluth Ice Forum.  Dan approached us last week and asked if Garrett might like to try a “big-guy” hockey camp… most of the participants are past the Cross-Ice stage, and are competitive players.  Garrett’s answer was a resounding YES.

So, this morning I loaded him and his gear up for the trek to the Ice Forum.  He was suited up and on the ice for the 9:00 Power Skating session.  Over the course of the day he had three hours of ice time, including the Power Skating, Puck Handling and a one hour game.  In all the kids are there from 8:30 until around 4:30.  They get a breakfast snack, mid morning snack and a lunch.

I left Garrett with the staff in order to go about my day… after watching a little of the Power Skating.  The coaches were really working the kids.  I noticed that they were able to spend time with just about every kid during each exercise… the bigger guys were getting pointers while the smaller guys were getting reminders of what they were supposed to be doing.

Around 3:30 I came back to watch some of the game.  It was excellent.  Basically, each team had three lines… big guys, medium guys and small guys… and they played against kids their own size.  They would play in short shifts and a couple of coaches were on the ice with them… and even a ref to make it feel official.

Coming home, Garrett told me all about his day.  And he told me how much fun he had.  He said that he wanted to be in camp all summer…

The camp runs this week and then there is another week August 3rd-7th.  We will be trying to arrange it for Garrett to make it to the August camp as well.

If you might have a kid interested in this, keep eyes here for contact info or feel free to contact me.  I’ll put you in touch with the right folks.

Earth Day Activites in Gwinnett County

There was a LOT going on in Gwinnett County, GA this weekend in celebration of the upcoming Earth Day.  Two of the coolest events were the Grand Opening of the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett in Duluth and the Earth Day Celebration at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center in Buford.

After T-ball in the morning, we headed up to the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett to see what was going on with the Grand Opening.  They had tours and displays and fun stuff for the kids.

I know… it doesn’t sound like the most glamorous event, but it was a lot of fun.  It was cool to see the technology inside the buildings.  Currently most trash carriers only handle 7 items for recycling.  The RBG is trying to push that to 35 items.  The have the ability to hold 250 garbage truck loads of recyclables while they are processed.  Cardboard, aluminum, paper and many types of plastic are all easily classified, separated and packaged fro shipment.  This can help reduce the loads on the current landfill system, as well as save money for the county.

After an enlightening view inside the RBG, we headed out towards Buford to visit the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center for their Earth Day Celebration.  We were running late and much of the crowd had already started to dissipate.  Some of the vendors and exhibitors had also packed it up.  However, there was still a lot to do, especially for Garrett.  At only 4 (almost 5) much of the science and ecology are lost on him, but he likes to walk the trails and visit the water room.

Personally, I love seeing the technology that makes the center one of the few LEED Silver Certified buildings in the southeast.  The ‘Green Roof’ and the water feature which functions as a heat exchanger are a couple of the items that top the cool list.  They have achieved a 35% reduction in energy usage for the center through the use of design, water feature, the planted roof and daylight utilization.

Either of these would be a great field trip.

Get a jump on Earth Day this weekend…

Earth Day 2007 at City College San Diego

Earth Day is April 22nd, but you can get a jump on it this weekend in Gwinnett County.  There are a couple of events that might be of interest.

Grand Re-Opening of the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett

In June of last year, the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett burned to the ground.  For the last 10 months or so, Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful has been rebuilding the center to make it bigger and better than it had been before the fire.

They will be opening it up to the public on April 18th, and celebrating with tours, give-aways and educational activities.

The coolest part is that they will be able to recycle 35 different materials.  This is up from seven, which is what most of the haulers currently handle in Gwinnett County.  We’ve been saving up cardboard just waiting…

Earth Day at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center

They are having a big event at the GEHC.  I have written a little about it previously, so feel free to get a little background here.

The event includes a fun run, an expo and kids activities.  The center is pretty cool, and worth a visit anytime.  But, when you throw in a parade…  Well, Saturday, April 18th should be a little cooler.  Personally, I am kind of curious about the REI Peak Maze.

Look for pics later if we are able to make both events…

Rainy day plans in Gwinnett

Garrett at the track

Garrett at the Controls

Today when we got to preschool, we discovered that the school would be closed for the day due to power issues.

And the energetic 4 year old needs to get out and do some things… today was rainy and cold… So, we decided to run out to Discover Mills and wander around. One of the things on the long list has been hitting the Slingshot Speedway to run some laps on their GIANT slot car track. We have spectated on multiple occasions, and it was time to step up to the controls.

When Garrett saw the Lightning McQueen car… the decision was made. We were going to race. The price wasn’t bad, we got
